Περιγραφή

One secret of longevity on the island is “melenia.” A local recipe reminiscent of mustalevria, made with honey instead of grape must, and it contains not only the vitamins of honey but also propolis together with royal beeswax, making it a genuine superfood. It was a type of breakfast or snack and, alternatively, due to the lack of milk, they also used flour, semolina, and honey. The green slopes of Fournoi are covered with savory and thyme, while their honey was found to have the most powerful antioxidant composition in a study by the National School of Public Health.

Εκτέλεση

In a saucepan, add the water and honey and let the syrup come to a boil once or twice from the moment it starts bubbling. Then remove the syrup from the heat and let its temperature drop a little. In another saucepan, add the butter and let it heat well. Add the flour and, stirring it constantly and vigorously with a wooden spoon, let it brown until it takes on a light brown color. Then gradually add the hot water, continuing to stir quickly and vigorously so that the cream does not form lumps and very quickly becomes thick. Leave the cream for a few minutes to cool and divide it evenly into bowls. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon and, finally, with sesame seeds. Optionally, you can drizzle the cream with a little more honey and then add the sesame seeds. Additionally, you can sprinkle with toasted almonds or walnuts.

Venizelika of Limnos
After the liberation of Lemnos from the Ottoman yoke in 1912 and, subsequently, with its incorporation into the Greek state, the island was visited by Eleftherios Venizelos. After disembarking at Romeikos Gialos in Myrina, where a crowd had gathered to welcome him, he sampled the treats that had been prepared for him. Among other things, he showed a particular preference for a small white fondant, filled with walnut and almond. And thus, the little fondants with white icing came to be called “venizelika” (Venizelos sweets).
