Chios
Volissos Archaeological Collection
The Archaeological Collection—known as the “Konaki,” formerly owned by Ioannis and Alexandros Belegris—is one of Volissos’s finest buildings, with traditional and eclecticist elements. It is a three-story stone structure rebuilt in 1868 by the Phanariot-born community elder Sgontzos. Its permanent exhibition tells the story of the famed Ariousios wine, from production to trade in the ancient world. Through sections on the worship of Dionysus, symposium vessels, and the spread of Chian amphorae, visitors discover the wine culture that shaped Chios’s identity. The rich visual material, exhibits, and the building’s atmosphere create a vivid experience connecting local tradition with its contemporary cultural presence.
