Oinousses
Windmill
The Oinousses windmill, built in 1844, is a characteristic example of traditional island architecture. It stands on a hill south of the settlement, ideally placed to harness the winds. Cylindrical in form, built of Oinoussian stone and topped with a conical roof, it follows the typology of the windmills of Tinos and Mykonos. It functioned until the early 20th century and, as was customary, its shell and mechanism formed an integrated construction. Although its internal mechanical parts no longer survive, the windmill remains an important monument of the island’s maritime and agrarian history, linking its productive past with the natural landscape of Oinousses.
