Volissos
Volissos is the largest village of northwestern Chios, the chief town of the Amani region. Tradition names it as a place where Homer lived. In 412 BC the Athenians landed here, defeated those who had seceded from the Chian alliance, and laid the area waste. Today Volissos teems with life, with its distinctive beauty and picturesque charm. In the village’s central square is a museum with the Archaeological Collection of Volissos related to the famed Ariousios wine, which the ancients called the “nectar of the gods.” In addition, the area offers the walking route Volissos – Malagkiotis Valley – Panagia Neromylon – Volissos, which traverses its plain and is recommended for lovers of hiking in nature. Along it you can admire the region’s nature, which is a protected NATURA area. Volissos celebrates on 6 August, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior.
