Monastery of Panagia Spilianí

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Spiliani is built inside a natural cave near Pythagoreio and is an important religious monument of Samos. The cave measures 120 x 36 m, is 8.5 m deep and lies at an elevation of 109–120 m. The little church inside the cave is dedicated to the Entry of the Theotokos, and the wonder‑working icon of Panagia Spiliani, known as “Kaliarmenissa,” is kept there. Next to the cave there is a small church dedicated to St. George, while inside the cave a holy spring rises, making it a place of pilgrimage. The monastery celebrates on 21 November and combines the cave’s natural beauty with worship, serving as an important center of faith for the island.
