Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour stands on the hill of the Pythagoreio Castle, next to the Tower of Lykourgos Logothetis, dominating the town’s western side. The church was erected in 1831 or 1833 at the initiative of Lykourgos Logothetis, a leading figure of the Greek Revolution, to honor the lifesaving victory of the Samians over the Turkish fleet in the straits of Mykale on 5 August 1824, an event celebrated every year on 6 August, the Feast of the Transfiguration. It is a domed basilica, originally single‑aisled with an apse, later extended to the north and south with rectangular additions, and a portico was added on the west side. It has a marble iconostasis and pulpit from the early 20th century and is now declared a Listed Historic Monument.
