Castle of Kampia
The Castle of Kampia stands above the village of the same name, on an elevated rock where now stands the chapel of Agia Paraskevi; hence locals call it the “Little Castle of Agia Paraskevi.” It is a typical medieval stronghold. It is thought that there was a central building where the church was later built. Of interest is the stair that starts at the base of the rock and ends at the castle entrance, where there is a semicircular turret. Its dating is placed in Byzantine times, but no archaeological research has been carried out for further documentation. The name “Castle of the Fair Maiden” echoes the widespread legend of a fortress besieged by an enemy army, with a beautiful maiden or queen bravely facing the besiegers. The castle is taken by treachery, and the heroine, rather than fall into enemy hands, leaps from the wall to her death.
