Koumeika

Koumeika, a picturesque traditional settlement on the southwestern slopes of Mount Ambelos, preserves key elements of local architecture and has been designated a settlement of outstanding natural beauty. The large square with its centuries‑old plane tree and the 1882 marble fountain are focal points. First settled in the early 18th century, the village’s economy relies mainly on agriculture—olive oil, vegetables, and its famous onions—while in the past many men worked in shipping. Sights include the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, and the Koumeika Folklore Museum “D. Papaioannou.” The village’s harbor, Ormos Koumeikon (Balos), is today a small seaside resort with a beach and family‑run businesses. The village hosts a major feast on 5 August for the Transfiguration of the Savior.
