Mesotopos

Mesotopos, one of the most traditional and lively villages of western Lesvos, lies in the island’s southwest, about 74 km from Mytilene. It is amphitheatrically built on the slopes of a hill, offering lovely views toward the Gulf of Kalloni, and preserves its architectural character with stone houses, tiled roofs, cobbled lanes and beautiful churches, such as that of Taxiarchis. The village likely took its name from its location, as it lies “mid-place” between Agra and Eresos. Residents are mainly engaged in agriculture, stock-breeding and processing agricultural products, while agrotourism has grown in recent years. Mesotopos is famed for its excellent olive oil and traditional cheeses, as well as for the residents’ warm hospitality. In the village square, traditional cafés and tavernas serve authentic flavors of the Lesvian countryside. Its seaport is Tavari, a seaside settlement with a quaint harbor and sandy beach about 4 km away. Close by are the beaches of Chrousos, known for crystal-clear waters, and Podaras, notable for its striking volcanic landscape and small fertile plain. Each year, on 6 August, the village comes alive with the great “Sotiros” festival, drawing many visitors and showcasing Mesotopos’ living tradition and community spirit.
