Nea Moni Museum
Nea Moni (early 11th century) lies in central Chios. At the center of the monastic complex stands the Katholikon. The monument of Nea Moni is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. South of the monastery and southwest of the Katholikon is the Refectory, where the monks dined communally. The Refectory space itself is the main exhibit, with the long built table with marble inlay in the center of the hall. In the same space are displayed 11th-century Byzantine sculptures from the monastery’s Katholikon, vessels from the roof of the Byzantine cistern, and fragments of detached frescoes from the Katholikon’s exonarthex and the Refectory. All objects exhibited in the monastery’s small museum–treasury are of later times and come from donations. Finally, there are interesting examples of ecclesiastical and secular silverwork of the 18th and 19th centuries, ecclesiastical gold embroidery, and icons of the same period.
