Nea Koutali
Nea Koutali was founded in 1926 at the site of Agia Marina, on the southern slope of Strombolithos, to host refugees from Koutali in the Propontis. Along with Agios Dimitrios, it is one of two Lemnian villages founded by Asia Minor refugees. The village is built amphitheatrically on Moudros Bay and is famed for its careful town planning. It begins at the pine forest of the Holy Trinity, planted by the refugees themselves, and ends at the picturesque stone-built little harbor with fishing boats. Nea Koutali became known for its maritime tradition and its renowned sponge divers, while since 2006 it has housed the “Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Diving.” Internationally renowned was Panagis Koutalianos, a sailor and legendary 19th-century wrestler who impressed audiences in Europe and America with feats of strength.
