Ikaria

Christos Rachon

Agios Kirykos is the capital and main port of Ikaria, on the island’s southeast side, where most public services, schools and the hospital are concentrated. The settlement developed in the 16th–17th centuries around the small chapel of its patron, St. Kyrikos, and is characterized by traditional amphitheatrical houses with tall windows, flowering courtyards and neoclassical buildings that today house administrative services. The older neighborhoods and cobblestoned alleys offer a unique historical image, while in the square the Monument to Ikarian Heroes and the Metropolitan Cathedral stand out. Notable sights include the Church of St. Kyrikos, the Archaeological and Folklore Museums, and the metal statue of Ikariada at the harbor, which connects the town with the myth of Icarus. The settlement’s location and traditional building showcase Ikaria’s cultural heritage and offer visitors a complete experience.
